5 Things Every New Guitarist Should Know

5 Things Every New Guitarist Should Know

Every day all around the world, many people sit down and create their own music on the guitar. Have you ever wished that you could join their number? In fact, you can! Learning to play the guitar is not as difficult as you might think, as you can find out here.

1. Keep your motivation high.
Make a long-term dream for yourself, but also keep short-term goals in mind. See if you can practice with friends that also play guitar. Give yourself small rewards when you meet your goals. Keep in mind that real skill takes real practice.

2. Do not stress about learning how to strum.
While it is something that you will have to figure out how to do, there is no right or wrong way to go about it. As you practice and evolve as a guitar player, you will slowly start to pick it up over time.

2. Let your fingertips build calluses.
Playing guitar can be surprisingly painful. Don't worry, though. Just keep at it. Keep practicing regularly until you begin to build up calluses on your fingertips. Once your fingers are tougher and used to playing, you will find that playing the guitar is significantly less painful.

3. Learn the open strings and start out playing simple songs.
Memorize the single notes because that will make learning the chords and scales easier later on. Although it's a good idea to try something more challenging on occasion, stick to playing simple songs for the first few months and practice daily.

4. Try not to be shy about playing for others.
Playing for yourself can get boring. Even if your guitar playing is a hobby, try to get yourself an audience. Play for friends and family. Letting others see how far you've come can encourage and motivate you to improve even more.

5. Learn to replace your strings.
As you begin to learn how to play your guitar, it is also a good idea to learn how to change your own strings, and to tune your truss rod yourself. It can be costly to have someone do these things for you, and if you know how, you can do it yourself as the need arises. Strings break, and go out of tune at a moment's notice, so knowing how means you will be back to playing as soon as possible.

Once you have mastered the basics of playing guitar, a whole new world of music will be open to you. You can learn to play your favorite songs, or you can start to create your own original musical compositions. The sky is the limit once you have learned how to play guitar.
